Tea is not always prepared in the same quantity. A single cup at work, an afternoon pot and several varieties for visitors create different purchasing needs. Begin with the most frequent routine. It helps determine whether individual portions or a pack that can be measured out is more suitable.

Compare similar teas and follow their respective preparation instructions. A large bag intended for a pot is not automatically equivalent to a small cup-sized bag. For loose tea, use the specified amount for the quantity you actually prepare rather than merely comparing package prices.

Include existing equipment

Is an appropriate infuser, pot or other tool already available? If not, the additional purchase belongs in the initial comparison. An accessory used daily is a different proposition from an elaborate set bought for a variety consumed only occasionally.

Consider cleaning and storage too. An infuser needs to fit the vessel and be cleanable according to its instructions. A large tea pack needs suitable storage while its product information remains available. Do not automatically buy new tins if the existing packaging is appropriate for the intended storage.

Count the portions that are consumed

A pack containing many servings appears economical only if those servings are actually used. When preferences change frequently, a smaller quantity may be easier to finish. Trying an unfamiliar variety in a modest pack avoids a large supply that later occupies space without being enjoyed.

For a pot, consider whether all the prepared tea is consumed. If some regularly remains, making a smaller quantity may be more useful than changing to a cheaper variety. That is a change in routine rather than a judgment about quality.

For use away from home, portioning and disposing of used material also matter. Decide around the facilities available at work or while travelling, not an idealised tea-making setup at home.

Finally, record which format suits each situation. One solution does not have to cover every occasion. Loose tea for a regular pot and individual portions for other uses may create a more manageable purchase than a large supply in just one format.
